Imagine that 16 crores or 3 million dollars is legally yours. But. Here’s The big BUT… er… morally you feel others need it more. What would you do?
The saints this high moral choice is being presented to are not saints, at least in the eyes of the world. Sonam C & Vijay Paul, partners in a Bhutanese construction, and facilitative company faced a choice. A no-brainer to the pragmatic. A difficult quandary to them.
Vijay, an MCC alumni, to many is the ultimate ‘work hard, party hard’ guy. A great friend with a seaman’s head for liquor, willing to rejoice the whole night, then race through mountain roads in the dark, at speeds that would leave F1 drivers a trifle breathless. Sonam C is a Bhutanese Patrician, part of a powerful, political & business dynasty.
In India, we have scant respect for the integrity of those in construction or politics. Smart, tough, opportunistic… yeah! Moral? Hell, NO!
Vijay & Sonam were facilitating a large Indian construction company pitching for a mega project. As is the practice with all major Govt projects, earnest money had to be put down. The sum was Rs 8 crore Indian rupees, which today would be about 16-25 crores.
Maytas was a part of The Satyam Group which suffered catastrophic legal & financial trouble. Unable to deliver on their end of the bargain, the earnest money was forfeit. The Bhutanese powers-that-be, to whom the money belonged, offered it to Vijay & Sonam, in gratitude for the nation-building and infrastructure support their company had extended on numerous occasions.
Offered 16 crores or $ 3 million, what would you do? It’s a no-brainer, it’s legally yours, take it. Why are you even hesitating?
And why were they hesitating?
Vijay over time had become friends with the Maytas’s team and realized that several had not been paid for months. And Sonam? What do you expect from a political chick? Sonam put it beautifully “The money is not ours… Would we like to carry this burden into a future life?”
Vijay’s conscience demanded he stood up for friends, Sonam looked at it with Reincarnational perspective. They took the call and stood by each other’s convictions.
Instead of keeping the many crores that was legally theirs, Sonam & Vijay acted with triumphant moral force. The 8 crores went back to Maytas, to a workforce, some of whom were on the edge of desperation. How many lives did they save? Futures did they protect?
In today’s world, ‘Money maybe King, but Character is Emperor’. And it is examples like this, that help us rise above… Beyond the current glorification of greed… We are applauding ambitious, pragmatists, standing for truths beyond the chattels of pigs…
Beyond the current breed of Robber Barons are Warrior Emperors. When did we forget the examples of Ashoka, Akbar, The Sikh Gurus, Stoic Kings like Marcus Aurelius & The Great Inca Kings? When did we turn away from examples of Lord Krishna who was King & Divine? The God who creates universes and erases worlds, does not shy away from power, he revels in it, using it to magnify…
There are millions today, who say they are on the spiritual path. Meaning they meditate a bit. But true spirituality is not in meditation halls, churches temples… nor is it in a forest or mountain top. It is wherever someone faces gut-wrenching challenges and choices and stands tall… And heaven applauds…
Some further thoughts:
You will note Vijay & Sonam took the hard decision from differing motivations and perspectives.
Think to a time when faced with a hard choice you acted in a way that ennobled you.
Think of examples in your life of those who did not take the easy way out.
